Urge… to… spend… too… strong… Republicans are trying to prevent shutdown by kicking the can down the road

On Saturday, September 30th, a few hours before yet one government shutdown because of Democratic fiscal irresponsibility, the House of Representatives passed a short-term spending bill without aid for Ukraine in an effort to avert a government shutdown, contingent upon the Senate’s approval. The Senate has to act quickly to prevent the furloughing of federal employees and the suspension of nonessential government programs. This development marked a rare moment of bipartisan agreement, with applause from both sides of the aisle after the passage of the continuing resolution (CR) by a vote of 335 to 91. It’s always easier to spend other people’s money, especially if these people also are unlucky enough to live in the future.

The funding provided by this measure will extend for 45 days beyond the fiscal year’s end, which concludes on Sunday, October 1st. Additionally, the bill allocates $16 billion for U.S. disaster relief aid, a request made by President Biden earlier in the summer, as noted by Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

This decision comes in the wake of House Republicans’ unsuccessful attempt to pass a separate stopgap funding bill that included conservative policy provisions like border security and spending cuts. Concerns over surging national debt, which reached $33 trillion in September, have intensified conservative worries about government spending. Never expect bipartisan support for debt control, only for more spending!
