On July 5th, the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s office confirmed that, according to Mr. Erdogan, Sweden has made “positive advancements” in its NATO bid by implementing anti-terrorism laws. However, ongoing demonstrations in Sweden by sympathizers of Kurdish militants have “hindered the progress made so far”! In response, Sweden asserts that it has fulfilled its obligations from a previous agreement reached with Turkiye in Madrid, which aimed to address her security concerns, including the enactment of this new anti-terrorism legislation, which primarily targets Kurds and their organization called PKK.

NATO’S next summit will take place in Lithuania on July 11th-12th. Ideally, Turkiye will have done us a favor, lifting her veto on Sweden joining NATO…
