“Maine manhunt after mass shooting, suspect named, residents urged to stay safe.”
A massive manhunt is currently underway in Maine following a mass shooting that occurred across two separate locations on Wednesday night, resulting in a tragic loss of at least 22 lives and leaving 30 individuals wounded. Law enforcement, led by Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck, held a late-night press conference, but they have refrained from confirming an exact count of victims due to the ongoing and rapidly evolving nature of the situation.
This shocking death toll is particularly striking for a state like Maine, which had recorded only 29 homicides for the entire year of 2022.
Although a suspect has not been officially named yet, the Lewiston Police Department has identified 40-year-old Robert R. Card, from Bowdoin, Maine, as a person of interest. Information obtained from an internal bulletin at the Maine Information and Analysis Center suggests that Card is a firearms instructor with military experience, possibly in the Army Reserve stationed in Saco, Maine. Authorities have urged the public not to approach Card as he is considered “armed and dangerous.”
In a Facebook announcement, the Lewiston police advised residents to “shelter in place” and to remain indoors with locked doors. The Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) extended this shelter-in-place order to include the town of Lisbon after Card’s white Subaru Outback was found near the Lisbon boat dock.
The active shooting incidents took place at two locations, namely Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant and Sparetime Recreation. Several road closures have been implemented as the investigation continues.
Central Maine Medical Center acknowledged the occurrence of a “mass casualty, mass shooter event,” but as of 9 p.m., they could not provide specific casualty figures. They are working with other area hospitals to receive patients.
