Baidu started as a search engine company (just like Google) but now it’s working on AI technology applications (again just like Google) and MAYBE it’s using data gathered by TikTok (OK, NOT just like Google, right…?)
On Tuesday, October 11th, Baidu, the Chinese tech giant, introduced a new version of its AI model, Ernie 4.0, which it claims can compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4. Baidu’s CEO, Robin Li, presented Ernie 4.0, emphasizing its ability to comprehend complex queries, apply reasoning, and produce answers using algorithms. The live demonstration showcased Ernie 4.0’s capabilities, such as generating advertising materials and even crafting a martial arts novel.
China is actively pursuing AI development to challenge the United States and aims to be a global leader in the field by 2030. USA is actively trying to prevent China from reverse-engineering its advanced computer chips. However, China has recently imposed stricter regulations on generative AI, requiring security reviews and approvals for product launches, in addition to compliance with government data requests.
Baidu, which started as a search engine company, has transitioned into AI technology, including generative AI like Ernie. Since 2022, Baidu has been co-operating more closely with Tik Tok (or Douyin, which is essentially the Chinese edition of Tik Tok) via its subsidiary, video streaming service iQiyi (imagine a Google-owned Netflix or Hulu!) to secure even more free training for its AI models such as Ernie. While Ernie 4.0 is not yet available to the public, Baidu plans to integrate AI technology into various services, such as its search engine and cloud drive. This technology can revolutionize how products like search engines function by offering customized responses instead of conventional search results.
