NY Rep Malliotakis Alleges Illegal Voter Registration

“NY Rep accuses officials of registering non-citizens to vote illegally.”

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) held a press conference accusing New York City officials of making attempts to register recently arrived border crossers and undocumented immigrants residing in shelters contracted by the city. Malliotakis claimed that city officials instructed shelter contractors, responsible for managing the city’s extensive migrant shelter network, to distribute voter registration materials and aid migrants in registering to vote. She asserted that these actions serve as concrete evidence supporting their prior assertions that the city aims to enroll non-citizens for voting purposes.

Malliotakis’ allegations stem from documents she received through a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request, revealing a contract between New York City and Homes for the Homeless, an NGO among several organizations being compensated to care for border crossers and undocumented immigrants. Her concerns were echoed by fellow Republican officials who joined her in condemning what they perceive as a fraudulent voting scheme orchestrated by New York City authorities.

City Councilman David Carr (R-Staten Island) reiterated that noncitizen voting goes against New York City’s laws, emphasizing that nobody should be facilitating the registration of noncitizens. He criticized the act of awarding contracts to nonprofit organizations—be it for homeless or migrant shelter provisions or any other services—with the intention of enrolling noncitizens, highlighting its illegality at this stage and asserting it should not be part of any contractual agreement.

Moreover, the Democrats in New York City had attempted to grant voting rights in municipal elections to nearly a million foreign nationals residing across the city in December 2021. However, this initiative was invalidated in 2022 by the New York Supreme Court, citing a violation of the state’s constitution as the reason for its dismissal.
