McCarthy out: Fiscal responsibility has won and it “only” cost the Republican majority in the Senate

Following Gaetz’s move, all Democrats and some Republicans have voted against Kevin McCarthy. He is out. There’s no “stopgap” spending bill for that!

A few hours ago, legislators made the historic decision to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, from his leadership position. This marks the first time in the House of Representatives’ history where the chamber has voted to remove a member from the highest-ranking role. It’s a dubious honor, no doubt. In a vote of 216 to 210, with eight Republicans joining all present Democrats, McCarthy was ousted from the position of Speaker. Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, initiated a motion against McCarthy on Monday evening, October 3rd, accusing him of failing to uphold the promises he had made to secure the role of Speaker in January.

Prior to the actual vote, there was an hour of heated debate, during which 11 Republicans voted in favor of ousting McCarthy alongside every Democrat. McCarthy’s supporters had occupied all the microphones on the GOP side of the chamber, compelling Gaetz to present his case from the side traditionally occupied by Democrats.
