According to the New York Times, despite Martha’s Vineyard being known for its liberal beliefs, only four out of the 49 individuals who were brought to the island by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in September 2022, referred to as “illegal aliens,” remain there. Governor DeSantis gained worldwide attention for sending two flights of undocumented immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, an exclusive island known for being favored by influential figures like former President Obama. As soon as the immigrants arrived, local officials declared a “humanitarian crisis,” and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker took action to transport most of them off the island to Joint Base Cape Cod. Since then, many of the immigrants have relocated to other places.
During the 2020 presidential election, Martha’s Vineyard voted overwhelmingly for President Joe Biden, further solidifying its reputation as a strongly Democratic enclave in New England.
