“Lisa’s Weibo Account Suspended Over Burlesque Show Controversy”
Lisa, the star of the K-Pop group Blackpink, has recently encountered an issue with her Chinese social media presence on Weibo. Her official account, @lalalalisa_m, can no longer be found on Weibo, one of China’s most popular social media platforms. The page that replaced it cited complaints about violations of laws, regulations, and Weibo’s Community Management Regulations as the reason for this action.
The exact nature of the complaints remains unclear, but it is not uncommon for Chinese web companies to suspend or remove content that violates the country’s strict censorship rules or generates significant controversy. This situation follows Lisa’s performance at the Crazy Horse Paris in September, a renowned burlesque performance venue, which stirred debate, particularly in more conservative parts of Asia.
While her Weibo account has been suspended, the accounts of the other Blackpink members, Jisoo, Jennie, and Rose, continue to be accessible. Blackpink, a prominent K-Pop supergroup, gained international recognition after their debut in 2016. They headlined Coachella and collaborated with American artists like Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez.
Lisa, the only member without Korean heritage, has built a substantial following in China, partly due to her role as a coach on a reality dance show. The controversy on Weibo revolved around questions regarding Lisa’s decision to associate herself with the Crazy Horse show, with some users supporting her choice and others criticizing it.
Despite differing opinions, some Weibo users lamented the removal of Lisa’s account, emphasizing that criticism should not necessarily lead to a ban. The situation has sparked a debate regarding freedom of expression and censorship on Chinese social media. CNN has reached out to Weibo and Lisa’s record label, YG Entertainment, for further comments on the matter.
