“The Marvels” is nothing but a marvel for Marvel: it’s set up to be THE box-office bomb of the year.

Since the debut of “Iron Man” in 2008, Marvel has been an unstoppable force in the box office, but signs of vulnerability are now emerging. The latest evidence of this is seen in the lackluster performance of “The Marvels,” the 33rd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite being a sequel to the successful 2019 film “Captain Marvel,” “The Marvels” opened over the weekend with a meager $47 million, a stark contrast to its predecessor’s $153.4 million launch and eventual $1.13 billion global earnings.

This represents an unprecedented box-office decline for a Marvel movie, with “The Marvels” debuting over $100 million less than “Captain Marvel,” a phenomenon previously unseen in the Marvel Land. The movie consulting firm Franchise Research Entertainment labeled it an “unprecedented Marvel box-office collapse,” highlighting a significant departure from the usual success trajectory of Marvel sequels.

It’s not “wokeness” per se that’s unattractive to a lot of people but a tactless, forceful impression that a movie is first of all “inclusive” and then a piece of art!
