Hey, remember “Threads”, the Twitter killer? Neither do we.

Meta’s first clear sign of overexpansion! Threads app is going the defunct Google+ way: Now you can delete Thread without losing your Instagram account, a necessary decoupling for a lot of people unwilling to put all their eggs in one basket. The Threads app, initially positioned as a potential “Twitter-killer,” is undergoing changes to allow users to… delete their Threads account while retaining their linked Instagram account (the really useful part, that is). Instagram users were frustrated by the inability to independently delete Threads accounts, necessitating the deletion of the associated Instagram account. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s CEO, announced the update on… Threads, addressing concerns about the lack of a standalone account deletion option. The modification enables users to access a “Delete or Deactivate Profile” option in the settings menu on Threads, offering a solution to the previous limitation.

Threads, launched in July, initially gained attention as a rival to Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). Despite early growth, with around 100 million monthly users three months after launch, it faced a decline attributed to missing features compared to competitors. Regulators, including the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), have criticized this tied selling practice, emphasizing that users should be able to delete Threads profiles without affecting their Instagram accounts. Additionally, Threads users will soon have the option to opt out of automatic post sharing to Instagram and Facebook, addressing concerns about limited user control over their own timeline.
