Police in Hamburg, Germany, are responding to a suspected hostage situation at the airport involving an armed man who breached security and drove onto the tarmac. The car contains at least two individuals, including a child. The incident began around 20:00 local time on Saturday.
The suspect’s wife has suggested a potential child abduction, and authorities believe it may be related to a custody dispute. The armed individual fired two shots into the air and threw incendiary bottles from the vehicle.
The car reached the airport’s apron, where aircraft are usually parked. Hamburg police referred to it as a “static hostage situation.” They have deployed a significant number of emergency services, including psychologists and negotiation specialists, as well as special forces.
As a result of the ongoing situation, all departures and arrivals at the Hamburg airport have been suspended. The police confirmed the continuation of the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.
