European Union banging heads with Amazon

Guess who’s gonna lose!

From August 25th on, the new European Digital Services Act imposes additional responsibilities on major tech companies to ensure “user safety from illegal content and unreliable products”. Violations of these obligations can result in substantial fines reaching billions of dollars or even a ban on operating within the EU. The implementation of these regulations aims to enable Europe to maintain its role as a global leader in regulation, whose production is far more comfortable and “greener” than the production of, I don’t know, actually useful services.

Among the 19 companies categorized as the largest online platforms and search engines under the Digital Services Act is none other than Amazon. Amazon and other big companies will be required to enhance their monitoring measures to safeguard European users against “hate speech, disinformation, and other harmful online content”, which is the true goal of the European regulators. The quasi-federal European state cannot and will not accept that you cannot regulate yourself to freedom!

While Amazon acknowledges the objectives of the Digital Services Act in addressing significant online risks, it disagrees with the classification of being a “very large online platform” that generates revenue primarily through advertising and disseminates “speech and information.” Of course Amazon has no problem complying with the woke agenda but European – style regulation is too much even for them.
