Do pop-stars serve in the military? South Korea says “yes” (video)

For over a century, USA has not been afraid of an invasion and mandatory military service was enforced only during WW II. However, when your country has no borders with Canada but faces an existential threat, the obligation to serve in the military cannot be set aside even if you are famous.

RM and V, members of the K-pop group BTS, have commenced their mandatory military service in accordance with South Korean law, as confirmed by their management agency on Monday, December 11th. The announcement coincided with the impending military duties of two other BTS members, Jimin and Jung Kook, who were expected to begin their service the following day. Meanwhile, three other BTS members—Jin, J-Hope, and Suga—have been fulfilling their conscription obligations for several months.

Jin and J-Hope are serving in the army, while Suga has opted for an alternative form of military service as a social service agent. The management company, HYBE, revealed that RM and V have reported to an army boot camp in the central city of Nonsan to commence their 18-month compulsory service. The entire seven-member BTS group plans to reunite in 2025 once all members have completed their military duties.
