European Union Officials Warn Elon Musk of Potential Twitter Suspension Unless He Adheres to Stringent Content Moderation Guidelines
The European Union has issued a stern ultimatum to Elon Musk, urging him to respond within a 24-hour window to allegations concerning his social network X, formerly known as Twitter. The accusations revolve around the dissemination of illegal content and disinformation pertaining to the recent Hamas attacks on Israel. European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, delivered this ultimatum to Musk through a written letter, accompanied by a caution of potential penalties in the event of an official investigation.
In swift response, Musk took to X to counter Breton’s claims, requesting a comprehensive list of the alleged violations. Musk emphasized that X is an open-source platform, characterized by transparency—an approach he noted is supported by the European Union.
Breton retorted by asserting that Musk is well aware of the numerous reports from both users and authorities regarding fake content and the glorification of violence on the platform. He maintained that the responsibility to substantiate X’s commitment to addressing these concerns lies squarely on Musk’s shoulders, challenging him to demonstrate his dedication to this matter.
