Congress is back in business at last: Mike Johnson (R-LA) elected House Speaker

Difficult times are not over though but are ahead: by November 15th, a new budget must be approved and the funding of two wars is a most controversial issue.

In a unanimous decision, Republicans elected Rep. Mike Johnson as the House Speaker, providing a resolution to weeks of political turbulence within their majority. The 51-year-old congressman from Louisiana quickly secured the position on the first ballot, receiving support from all Republicans who were eager to move past the recent upheaval and focus on governing.

As the newly sworn-in House Speaker, Johnson now holds the second-highest position in the U.S. government. He is a less prominent figure within the House GOP leadership but became the fourth Republican nominee in a series of contentious power struggles following Kevin McCarthy’s removal. Despite not being the party’s first choice, Johnson’s strong conservative and religious convictions, along with his even-tempered nature, have earned him favor within the GOP, including support from influential figure Donald Trump. At his first statements after his election, Johnson expressed his commitment to getting the “people’s House” back to work after taking the gavel.
