Chauvin Stabbed in Prison Altercation

“Derek Chauvin, convicted in Floyd’s murder, stabbed in prison altercation.”

Derek Chauvin, the ex-Minneapolis police officer found guilty of George Floyd’s murder, was reportedly stabbed by another inmate in a federal prison, as reported by the Associated Press. The incident occurred at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, according to a source familiar with the situation. Chauvin’s conviction in Floyd’s 2020 murder led to widespread protests across the nation.

The Bureau of Prisons confirmed an incident at the prison around 12:30 p.m. on a Friday but did not explicitly confirm Chauvin’s involvement. Prison staff intervened and administered life-saving measures to an injured inmate, later taken to a local hospital for further assessment and treatment.

This event is the second notable occurrence at the prison within approximately a year. In a previous incident in November 2022, an inmate in the low-security camp attempted to shoot a visitor, though the firearm malfunctioned.

Chauvin received concurrent sentences: 21 years for federal civil rights charges and 22.5 years for second-degree murder at the state level. His lawyer previously expressed concerns about Chauvin’s safety among other inmates, advocating for his isolation from them.

The recent stabbing incident coincides with Chauvin’s renewed efforts to challenge his federal civil rights conviction. He claimed in a recent filing that had he known about the theories presented by a pathologist from Kansas, whom he is currently in contact with, he would not have pleaded guilty in 2021.
