A temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict began early Friday, November 24th, offering a brief respite from the hostilities. This pause in fighting opens the way for the exchange of numerous hostages held by militants in Gaza for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. The truce, lasting at least four days, aims to bring relief to the 2.3 million people in Gaza who have endured weeks of Israeli attacks. Families in Israel, anxious about the fate of their loved ones captured during the October 7 Hamas attack that triggered the war, may find some solace during this ceasefire.
THE MAIN TERMS
The agreement stipulates that Hamas will release a minimum of 50 out of the approximately 240 hostages taken on October 7, with a focus on releasing women and children first. In return, Israel commits to freeing 150 Palestinian prisoners. Additionally, for every extra 10 hostages released, Israel has agreed to extend the truce by an additional day. The ceasefire commenced at 7 a.m. local time and is set to endure for at least four days.
