Biden’s February executive order aims to eliminate bias in technology design and use, including AI. AAF memo points out the release of the National AI R&D Strategic Plan in May, under Prabhakar’s committee, emphasizing the need for resources to combat harmful biases and acknowledging the risk of AI systems perpetuating internet-derived biases.

The report emphasizes the research on how AI can address inequities caused by systemic, structural, and individual bias. The AI committee is under the National Science and Technology Council, led by Vice President Kamala Harris, who was appointed as the “AI czar” to spearhead the administration’s initiative for responsible AI innovation and safeguarding Americans’ rights and safety. Harris has previously voiced concerns about racial bias in AI and advocated for its mitigation.

AI has generated significant discussion, particularly since the launch of the AI tool ChatGPT in November. Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, raised concerns about the potential weaponization of AI to propagate political agendas through the dissemination of false information.
