Owner of X/Twitter plans to sue Media Matters regarding the so-called “Neo-n@zi endorsement”
In response to a report by Media Matters for America, X/Twitter issued a statement accusing the organization of misrepresenting user experience to undermine freedom of speech and deceive advertisers. X plans to file a lawsuit against Media Matters, alleging collusion in a fraudulent attack on the company. Furthermore, X claimed that Media Matters manipulated its timeline to misinform advertisers about ad placement next to alleged “pro-Nazi” content. The report’s accuracy is doubtful, according to X/Twitter, stating that out of 5.5 billion ad impressions on the day of the release, only 50 were displayed next to the content highlighted by Media Matters.
Several major corporations, including Apple, Disney, and Warner Bros, have joined a boycott against X. Elon Musk, X’s CEO, used the boycott to promote X’s new $16 premium subscription service, emphasizing an ad-free experience and criticizing large advertisers for suppressing free speech. The Media Matters report arose from controversy surrounding Musk’s agreement with a user’s post linking Jewish organizations to “dialectical hatred against whites” amid the Israel-Gaza conflict. Musk clarified that his criticism targeted liberal organizations, particularly the Anti-Defamation League. The report coincided with a broader discussion on an X ad against antisemitism featuring a white working-class father, prompting user discontent given survey data indicating higher anti-Semitic viewpoints among minorities than whites.
