First eye transplant announced

It’s the first recorded time in history doctors have managed to transplant a whole eye.

Surgeons at NYU Langone Health have successfully performed the world’s first full human eye transplant as part of a face transplant for Aaron James, a man whose face and one eye were severely damaged in a high-voltage power line accident. While it’s too early to determine if James will regain vision in his new left eye, the transplant aims to improve the cosmetic outcome of his face by supporting the transplanted eye socket and lid.

The procedure, conducted last May, is showing promising results, with James recovering well. Although he hasn’t regained movement or blinking ability in the new eye, he has started to experience sensation. James, 46, expressed optimism, acknowledging the groundbreaking nature of the surgery and hoping it will benefit future patients.
