Israel’s true best friend

Israel’s true best friend

Hint: It’s not USA!

As far as protests regarding the Israeli – Palestinian war, India seems to be no different from many other countries. However, Indian-controlled Kashmir, a region claimed by Pakistan, which is known for its vocal pro-Palestinian stance, has remained notably silent. Indian authorities have quietly taken measures to prevent solidarity protests in the Muslim-majority region. They have also instructed Muslim preachers not to discuss the conflict in their sermons.

These restrictions in Kashmir are certainly part of India’s broader efforts to prevent any protests that could potentially escalate into demands for an end to New Delhi’s rule in the disputed region. But there’s more: this shift in approach is seen as reflective of a change in India’s foreign policy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India has traditionally maintained close ties with both Israel and the Palestinians but it has recently taken a more balanced stance. While it condemned a Hamas attack on October 7 and expressed solidarity with Israel, India also emphasized the importance of upholding international humanitarian law in Gaza amid the increasing civilian casualties. India is trying to please Israel and at the same time maintain a formally neutral stance.
