Elon Musk and Tech Billionaires Push for More Babies

Silicon Valley elites, led by Elon Musk, push for pro-natalist policies to combat declining birth rates.

Elon Musk’s frequent warnings about declining birth rates on a global scale highlight a growing trend among Silicon Valley tech billionaires. Musk, who is a father to 10 children with three different women, has consistently expressed concerns about the declining population and advocated for policies that encourage childbirth. As the CEO of Tesla and the founder of SpaceX, he has used his platform to promote pro-natalist views.

In January 2022, Musk made a tweet, stating, “If the alarming collapse in birth rate continues, civilization will indeed die with a whimper in adult diapers.” The ideology of natalism, which supports reproduction as a fundamental human objective, often encourages high birth rates and policies that promote parenthood.

Many natalists fear that decreasing birth rates in developed countries like the United States and much of Europe could lead to economic collapse, the erosion of civilizations, and the gradual extinction of cultures. Musk also expressed his opinion on social media, saying, “Having children should be incentivized, not be a financial penalty like it is in most countries!” He emphasized the importance of creating the next generation of humans to avoid spiraling into oblivion.

Musk’s statement was prompted by Katalin Novak, the President of Hungary, who announced various pro-natalist policies, including tax exemptions for women with more than four children and loan forgiveness for couples with three or more children. Hungary leads the way in implementing such policies, contributing a significant portion of its national GDP to boost birth rates. This concern about demographic decline is not limited to Hungary, as many other countries have also adopted pro-natalist policies. The United Nations reported a significant increase in the number of countries with such policies over the years.

Natalism policies have been implemented in several nations, including Hungary, Poland, Greece, Korea, Japan, Latvia, and Finland. The United States has also witnessed a decline in fertility rates across various demographics, with the birth rate decreasing by 22% between 2007 and 2022.

Musk has expressed serious concerns about the population decline in the U.S. and donated $10 million to the Population Wellbeing Initiative (PWI) in 2021. He believes that population decline is a more significant issue than climate change. He has consistently urged wealthy tech entrepreneurs to have more children, as he considers that wealth is correlated with higher IQ.

This natalist movement among the wealthy elite is rooted in the long-term perspective that permeated Silicon Valley in the 2010s, which emphasized humanity’s positive influence on future generations. Notable figures like Peter Thiel, Sergey Brin, and Larry Ellison invested billions in biotech companies aiming to extend life. Today, these elites are shifting their focus to natalism, with Thiel and venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson investing in fertility centers.

The natalist movement is now led by Malcom and Simone Collins, who founded the non-profit pronatlist.org. They express concerns that declining birth rates could threaten freedom of expression, LGBTQ rights, racial equality, and climate awareness. This movement has roots in various religions, including Judaism, Islam, and major branches of Christianity. The Amish community is one prominent example of strong proponents of procreation.

Malcolm and Simone Collins want to have up to 13 children together and have stored numerous embryos in a freezer. They believe their bloodline will dominate the human population after 11 generations. However, their viewpoint has been criticized as a form of eugenics, which they reject. They claim that they aim to provide their children with the best possible “roll of the dice.”

In conclusion, the natalist movement, particularly among the wealthy elite in Silicon Valley, is gaining traction due to concerns about declining birth rates and their potential consequences on society and culture. Elon Musk and other prominent figures are actively promoting pro-natalist views and advocating for policies that incentivize childbirth.
