Government shutdown countdown: Reps are holding the line for now…

On October 1st, federal government runs out of money for nonessential spending. Republican members of the Congress are being “nudged” to seek a compromise e.g. a temporary, “stopgap” bill including border security funds. In the light of the recent new compromise on the debt ceiling, that would be a mistake.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is working to unify members of his conference in an effort to enhance their bargaining power in spending discussions with the Senate, both publicly and privately. He has emphasized that a government shutdown would not strengthen Republicans’ position in negotiations, but he faces resistance from a conservative faction within his party that prefers a shutdown over collaboration with Democrats. In addition to this resistance, former President Donald Trump has urged Republicans on Truth Social to oppose any spending bill that doesn’t cut funding for the Department of Justice.
